Abdominal pain during pregnancy

During pregnancy, your body will undergo many changes as it adapts to the growing life inside of you. It can cause some belly pain in pregnancy, but you can try these methods of relieving them.

Carrying a baby puts a lot of pressure on your muscles, joints and veins. This can make you feel uncomfortable around your stomach area. Abdominal pain during pregnancy can be a normal part of the process as your body changes to accommodate your growing baby. Find out about the causes of belly pain in pregnancy.

What are the common causes of abdominal pain during pregnancy?

Some belly aches and pains during pregnancy are quite common, and can be caused by:

  • Round ligament pain – a stabbing pain in your belly, or a dull, lingering pain. This pain can be caused by two large ligaments that run from your uterus to your groin. As the uterus grows, these ligaments are stretched and can create discomfort.
  • Gas and constipation – gas during pregnancy is caused by food travelling more slowly than usual. Drinking water, eating fibre-rich foods and exercising can help alleviate gas and constipation. Learn more about constipation during pregnancy.
  • Common pains there are more abdominal discomforts that can be experienced during pregnancy. Your growing uterus, stomach viruses and food sensitivities are all types of harmless abdominal pain.

How to ease pregnancy abdominal pain ?

  • Resting when the pain happens can ease cramping.
  • Try sitting down for a while.
  • Lying down on the side opposite to where the pain is, and putting your feet up.
  • Having a warm bath.
  • Trying to relax and drinking plenty of water.
  • Empty your bladder often.

What if you feel unwell and have abdominal pain?

Abdominal pain could be a sign of a serious problem. Never ignore abdominal pain especially if your pain doesn’t go away after several minutes of rest. We recommend that you visit your doctor right away if you feel like it could be more than just belly pain.
