WHAT’S MY STAGE ?

Don’t know which stage / week you are in?

When was the first day of your last menstrual period?

Your first trimester pregnancy is often spent getting used to the idea that you’re expecting a baby and reading up on all the changes that your body is going through and are yet to come.

Although it’s still early, adopting good eating habits now will give your baby the best chance of healthy development.

Your baby is growing at a noticeable rate and by 12 weeks you may even be starting to show – but in the meantime this section will explain what’s happening week by week and how you can lay the foundations for a healthy pregnancy.

Week 12 Pregnancy

Your baby is now around 6cm in length. Their face is beginning to look more human; their eyes have moved closer together and their ears have taken up position on either side of their head.

Hair is beginning to grow and fingers and toes have soft nails, while their mouth has developed 20 small buds which will become baby teeth. At week 12 some babies are able to suck their thumb and are generally much more active. The vocal cords are complete, but will not be used until birth.

Very soon you may start to show; around now your uterus grows out of your pelvis and rises above your pubic bone. From then on, it will grow into your abdomen, creating your bump. For many, it’s at this stage that pregnancy starts to feel more real; 12 weeks is often the time when mums choose to let everyone know.

By the time you reach nine months your growing uterus will weigh up to 900g (compared to roughly 70g before you became pregnant) but it will soon return to its pre-pregnancy size within weeks of the birth.
